I am delighted to see the appearance of the first comprehensive atlas recognizing the important relationship between periodontal and systemic health and disease. I am delighted to see the appearance of the first comprehensive atlas recognizing the important relationship between periodontal and systemic health and disease. The atlas is not intended to cover the new areas of in terest in relation to periodontal health and cardiac and other disease, but rather to demonstrate the systemic diseases that manifest to the periodon tist and hygienist. The atlas thus covers a vast range of systemic disorders that may present with gingival or periodontal lesions and highlights the importance of the periodontal and oral medicine teams in diagnosing and managing patients with sometimes complex medical problems. The authors, Professor George Laskaris and Professor Crispian Scully, are both active clinicians, teachers and researchers in oral medicine, with wide experience and special interest in the oral medicine/periodontal interface and both have published widely in their fields. I welcome this contribution to the advancement of care for the patient withperiodontal disease. Crispian Scully is Director of Special Projects at the UCL-Eastman Dental Institute; Professor of Special Care Dentistry, University College London, UK; and President-elect of International Academy of Oral Oncology. He has written and edited over 40 books, written over 150 book chapters and has over 860 papers cited on MEDLINE and over 300 others. He is Editor of Oral Oncology, Co-Editor of Oral Diseases, and Associate Editor of the Journal of Investigative and Clinical Dentistry. He has received the CBE, University of Helsinki Medal of Honour, University of Santiago de Compostela Medal, University of Granada Medal, Fellowship of UCL, and honorary degrees from the Universities of Athens, Granada, Helsinki and Pretoria. He has received the UK Dental Award for the Most Outstanding Achievements in Dentistry, the Award of the Spanish Society for Oral Medicine and American Biographical Institute UK Man of the Year.
