Periodontal disease is a common chronic in ammatory condition of infectious origin that results in breakdown of the periodontium. Untreated gingivitis may develop into periodontitis, which results in loss of connective tissue and bone around teeth. During the early stages of dentistry, periodontitis was considered as a disease of the oral cavity, but advancement in the field of periodontitis shows that periodontal pathogens has a greater role in the different stages of a women's life. It has been associated with changes in the oral cavity when a female reaches puberty, during pregnancy and menopause. These changes are due to the hormonal changes during each stage.
