Produktbeschreibung
This Etymological dictionary presents the complex derivation of words in simple family tree charts. They help us see the derivation of words at a glance and follow their spread in different languages. The charts also show the earlier or original meanings of words that could help us understand the roots of some of our present social trends and attitudes. The words for father in Indo-European languages, for example, come from roots meaning "protector of the family". Some other roots tell us that the role of mothers was to feed, brothers had to carry the family load, and daughters were expected to milk their farm animals. The charts in this dictionary show derivation of over 9400 Persian and other Iranian words along with their 5800 cognates in Indo-European languages. Due to the exchange of words with other languages, more than 1400 cognates in Arabic, Hebrew, Turkish and other languages are also included in these charts.
Autorenporträt
Dr. Ali Nourai collected, studied and organized the etymological data of Persian words since the early 1990's. He started to save his data in charts like family trees or org charts where the derivatives of each root were shown as branches with words in Persian, English and their cognates in other languages. While researching and expanding his database, he published his charts in An Etymological Dictionary of Persian, English and other Indo-European Languages in 2013 and 2017 and later as Persian Etymology Charts in 2022. In order to simplify the use of this etymological data, he later reversed the direction of the family tree charts such that, instead of showing different words derived from each root, the charts now show different roots combined to make each word. This book, Persian Etymology - from Indo-European and other roots is a collection of these "derivation charts" showing the etymology of over 3400 Persian words.
