Alfred Jefferson Vaughan, Jr. was born May 10, 1830, in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. Vaughan was graduated fifteenth in his class of twenty-nine at the Virginia Military Institute on July 4, 1851. Before the war, Vaughan was a civil engineer. When the Civil War broke out, Vaughan, then living in Marshall County, Mississippi, enlisted in the 13th Tennessee Infantry. At the inception of the war, Vaughan was elected captain of his company. Subsequently, he rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and Colonel commanding the 13th Tennessee. Vaughan was commissioned Brigadier General and commanded Vaughan's (Preston Smith's) brigade after the Battle of Chickamauga, GA. Vaughan's military career ended in the Atlanta Campaign, when on the thirteenth anniversary of his graduation from VMI, he was severely wounded in the leg by a Federal artillery shell at Vining Station, GA.
