This book is a study of music as theme and musician-characters in German fiction from the baroque to the late nineteenth century, concentrating on the novellas of the Munich professor, Wilhelm Heinrich Riehl (1823-97). It also analyses Riehl's adaptation of such musical forms and techniques as sonata-allegro movement, thematic counterpoint and syncopation to the structuring of his fiction. Riehl's musico-literary creations are set against the background of his musicological and cultural-historical theories.
