Ayurveda which means science of life, is the oldest medical science in the Indian subcontinent practiced since 12th century B.C. During the past decade, Ayurveda has received growing attention around the world. Ayurvedic medicines are mainly of herbal, metal & mineral origin. Lauha (Iron) in Rasa Sastra is described in Dhatu varga. Its importance can be understood by the fact that it is the most abundantly used metal since Vedic period. More than 400 preparations of Lauha are mentioned in ancient texts. Lauha bhasma is known as one of the best medicines for iron deficiency anemia. It is better absorbed from GIT and is devoid of the side effects. Many research works has been conducted at various institutions to prove the haematinic property of Lauha bhasma and now it is an established fact. In this project attention has been provided to establish physico-chemical characterization of Lauha bhasma. The data generated by this project may help in inclusion of Lauha bhasma in national programs. So, apart from standardization factor we have studied teratogenic effect of Lauha bhasma which will be of great help to decide safety of Lauha bhasma in its application during pregnancy.
