Demand for broadband wireless communication services
has been increasing explosively, driving the surge of
research and development activities for future
wireless communication systems with higher data rates
and increased functionality. During the past few
years, smart (or adaptive) antenna systems adopting
these array systems have been developed for
commercial as well as military use to suppress
multipath fading, delay spread and cochannel
interferences, resulting in better quality of
services. However, traditional hybrid array antennas
may be not appropriate for constructing a large
phased array antenna since it generally requires
several thousand elements fed by a phase shifter as
well as a switch for every antenna element, which is
complex in nature. This book places emphasis on the
implementation of a phased array antenna system on
silicon utilizing the monolithic microwave integrated
circuit (MMIC) technology. This new approach to the
integration of a phase array antenna system should
provide professionals in MMIC and Silicon Technology
fields with a basic view for realizing smart antenna
systems with an excellent performance
