The city's variation is as numerous as the variations of city life, which can be studied. The city is a unique, individual phenomenon. It has got a physical form, an icon which is shaped in the longue durée. The city is a tradition. This book is devoted to the creation of the tradition of the city, its invention, development, and the 21st century comprehension. The analysis of cities from different perspectives and the connection of the contemporary cities to the past are the main goals of the book.

Eka Avaliani is Professor of History at faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, International Black Sea University, Tbilisi, Georgia. She is a Doctor of Historical Sciences and head of Interdisciplinary Research Center. She is an author of several monographies, text-books and articles in Georgian, English and Russian.
