Photosynthetic water oxidation is an uniquefundamental biological process that occurs in thewater-oxidizing complex (WOC) of the multi-componentpigment-protein complex called photosystem II (PSII).Understanding this reaction can be expected toprovide essential clues for the construction ofefficient artificial systems that utilize the energyofsun light to split water to oxygen and hydrogen. To elucidate the basics of photosynthetic wateroxidation chemistry one needs to know its energeticsas well as the structure and function of all thecofactors participating in the different oxidationstates, Si states (i = 0,...,4), of the WOC. Thisbook, therefore, is focused on 1) a comparative studyof the energetics of the water splitting reaction ofPSII in Chlorophyll (Chl) a- and Chl d-containingorganisms and, 2) on the exploration of the functionand binding sites of the inorganic cofactorshydrogencarbonate (bicarbonate) and chloride withinthe WOC.
