Medicinal plants played an important role, with "God" blessing, in the preservation of human health. Maerua pseudopetalosa is traditionally used as cough remedy and cure for tumors in some parts of Sudan. Accordingly the needs arose for a scientific pursuit for identification of natural bioactive compounds from the plant. This is done through evaluation of its phytochemical compounds, antimicrobial activity and toxicity. The techniques employed in the fractionation and identification of the compounds are based on chromatographic and spectrometric data. Successfully it became evident that some of its chemical constituents may provide a new potential source of natural anticancer agent(s). A clear indication is the presence of proline-N-methyl-butyl ester, which is a derivative of free proline. The latter was suggested to inhibit breast cancer development.
