Elisabeth-Claude Jacquet de La Guerre's Les Piéces de Clavecin, Premier Livre, was published in 1687, the year in which the composer turned 22. Prior to the appearance of this volume, there had been only two publications of harpsichord collections, both by established masters. In 1670, Jacques Champion de Chambonnieres had brought out thte two volumes of his Pièces de Clavecin, and Jean-Nicolas Lebègue's Pièces de Clavecin, Premier Livre, had come off the press in 1677. Jacquet de La Guerer's collection, with its dedication to Louis XIV, was a statement to the world that here was a young musician claiming her place among the first rank of French harpsichordists.
