In August 1917, as the United States joined World War I, he entered military service, receiving flight training first at the Aviation Ordnance School atCornell University and then at flying schools at Hazelhurst Field, New York and Ellington Field, Texas. On May 8, 1918 he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Officer's Reserve Corps and served as an instructor pilot at Ellington Field for the remainder of the war.
