Piet is an almost twelve-year-old, overweight, introverted boy who is neglected by his parents and bullied by his classmates. Even his older sister shows little compassion for him. He lives in the year 2050, in a world where climate change has left unbearable traces: in March, temperatures rise above 40 degrees; more than 25 percent of the Earth's population in the Southern Hemisphere are climate refugees; the coral reefs in the oceans have completely vanished; and polar bears are admired in illustrated books as if they were dinosaurs that went extinct millennia ago. Piet carries the weight of the world and his sensitive compassion for all living creatures on his shoulders, trying to escape his unhappy existence with too much ice confectionery. One day, the universe presents him with a challenge in the form of an ominous letter from the year 1830, which he tries to unravel with the help of his beloved grandmother, her dog Lieselotte, and his only friend Bodo. But will they be able to solve the mystery of the letters from the past? Piet realises that being part of something special gives even an introverted person courage and self-confidence, and anyone who can call even a single friend their own is rich for that reason alone. Not everyone has had a happy childhood; many people are concerned about our planet-just like Piet. Perhaps you, dear Reader, may find yourself on one page or another of this story. This is a fantasy tale for all those who still dare to dream the impossible and never give up their belief in a better world.
