Doppler ultrasound of the supra-aortic trunks is a systematic investigation in the pre-operative assessment of all cardiac surgery. We surveyed 666 patients who underwent SATS as part of the cardiac surgery work-up at the cardiology department of Habib Thameur Hospital. We divided the study population into two groups: valvular heart disease patients and coronary heart disease patients. We then compared the epidemiological and ETSA data between these 2 groups. Cardiovascular risk factors (CRFs) were significantly more frequent (p<0.001) in patients with coronary artery disease. The vast majority of these patients (93.5%) had at least 2 CRFs. Patients with coronary artery disease had more FRCVs than those with valvular artery disease. The prevalence of significant carotid stenosis was significantly (p<0.001) higher in patients with coronary artery disease. There was a positive correlation (r=0.145) between coronary status and carotid status. Patients with valvular heart disease should benefit from an EDTSA depending on the FRCV present, especially age and hypertension, and their number, history of stroke and coronary status.
