The use of autologous platelet concentrates has been
proposed to accelerate wound repair and to stimulate
the regenerative capacity of injured tissues. Two
pilot clinical studies about the effect of an
autologous platelet concentrate in horses with severe
chronic musculoskeletal pathology are presented in
this research. Additionally, the technique for
preparing this platelet concentrate, including its
cellular and molecular characteristics is described
in this book. The results obtained in this work open
a new encouraging research field on clinical and
molecular effects of autologous platelet concentrates
in equine chronic musculoskeletal pathology. The
future potential results obtained in horses can be of
key value to determine the potential use of
autologous platelet concentrates in human beings with
chronic musculoskeletal pathology. This book
represents an important reference for equine
practitioners dedicated to the management of lame
horses and researchers interested in the future
trends of the regenerative therapy in both veterinary
and human medicine.
