President Johnson went on nationwide television on August 7, 1964 to announce that United States ships patrolling peacefully off North Vietnam were attacked by Communist torpedo boats and that they had been repelled by the forces of the United States. Soon congress was authorizing war powers for the President, and the war was on. Watching him at my parents' home in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, I had no idea that in less than four years I would be in training to go to this war in Vietnam myself.
