A mysterious vision. A cryptic epiphany. A hopeful dream ballad for strange and dangerous times. *** From the foreword: "Anyone who writes knows that some days you're arranging driftwood and desert island beach stones, trying to signal an airplane, trying to jury-rig a radio telescope from the stuff in your pockets. And then, other days, you're soaked catching high tide tsunami water in cups, scrambling to translate an alien transmission. This was the latter. These are strange days, to say the least. Here's to better days ahead."

A key figure in the Pre-Raphaelite, Arts & Crafts, and Aesthetic movements, he championed traditional, anti-industrial, and decorative arts. His Le Chant d'Amour, a serendipitous match for this lyric, was actually inspired by an old Breton folk lyric: Alas, I know a love song, / Sad or happy, each in turn. He painted several versions - the earliest, oddly enough, on the inside lid of his upright piano. The nature illustrations, initials, cover, and paper are adapted from the Book of Flower Studies, a 16th-century illuminated catalog, likely a model for works for Queen Claude de France. Though the images were painted in witness to their inherent beauty, not gathered merely for their symbolism, they can, as in dreams, have meaning, if you like. Both pieces appear courtesy of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Open Access Artworks Collection, a literal treasure trove of art and artifacts from ancient to modern, generously made available for public use, exploration, and inspiration.
