The white lady, Emma Wellington, is too benevolent and in love with Lan, an Afro-American, to gauge her emotions and check the quality of his involvement with her. He moves out of their matrimonial home but not entirely out of her life, as both of them get into other complex relationships, exploring other levels of friendships with people of different sexual, political, cultural, religious and marital orientations. Emma experiences what it means to live within racial tensions, insecurities and persecution complexes germane in complicated love affairs, where certain choices alienate family and friends, leaving much room for depression and suicide. With Emma's fascination with her psychiatrist, Dr Don; and her lover's older brother, Tobe, one wonders if she will be able to overcome her fears, find stability and contentment in order to rebuild her fallen walls of hope and happiness.
