Autorenporträt
John Clare (1793-1864) ist einer der bedeutendsten Dichter der englischen Romantik. In ärmlichen Verhältnissen aufgewachsen, verdiente Clare seinen Lebensunterhalt als Tagelöhner und Geiger. Erste Gedichtsammlungen wurden groß gefeiert. Clare litt jedoch zunehmend unter finanziellen und gesundheitlichen Problemen, bis er schließlich in eine private Nervenheilanstalt in High Beach, Essex eingewiesen wurde. Vier Jahre später versuchte er, der Anstalt zu entkommen.
