Earth is covered 70 percent by water. The total amount of water in the world is approximately 1.4 billion km³, of which 97.5 percent is saltwater, occupying 1,351,000,000 km³. Freshwater lakes and rivers, ice and snow, and underground aquifers hold 2.5 percent of this water: 35 million km³ of freshwater on earth. Nearly 70 percent, or 24.34 million km³, of freshwater is in the form of glacial ice or snow. Groundwater and soil moisture account for 10.55 million km³ (30.1 percent). Only 0.3 percent is in freshwater lakes, rivers, and swamps. Of this surface freshwater, 87 percent is found in lakes. Freshwater lakes hold about 0.1 million km³. Rivers, the most visible form of freshwater, account for 0.002 million km³.
