The following pages contain poems written by my mother, Mafalda "Maffy" Medda, over the last twenty-eight years of her life including her oldest poem, "Diamonds and Furs," dating back to 1985. It was her passion to write poetry and her dream to become a published author. When she passed away unexpectedly on February 22, 2013, her poetry was left unfinished. Her dream quickly became my passion. On October 14, 1949, Mafalda "Maffy" Medda was born to Bartolomeo Medda and Piccoli Antonieta Medda in Sardinia, Italy. She was the youngest child. She had four brothers and three sisters. In 1969, Maffy moved with her husband to Stillwater, Oklahoma. She taught herself how to speak English by reading "Gone with the Wind." In 1981, Maffy moved with her family to Sugar Land, Texas, where she became a member of Holy Family Catholic Church located in Missouri City, Texas. In 1989, The World of Poetry's celebrated Board of Directors unanimously voted to honor Maffy with the 1989 Silver Poet Award. This is an exclusive award for poets who have shown the confidence, skill, and depth to express themselves in poetry. On September 2, 1989, Maffy was presented the Silver Poet Award in Washington, D.C. during the Fifth Annual World of Poetry Convention that was televised with a live studio audience by World Television Productions. On March 30, 1994, Maffy was welcomed as a new member of Grove Avenue Baptist Church located in Richmond, Virginia. On February 16, 2007, Maffy obtained certificates of registration and copyrights from The United States Copyright Office for writing the song lyrics for: "Brand New Face," "I Can't Help Wondering," "Mostly Cloudy," and "When it Rains in Houston." In July 2007, Maffy was awarded the Editor's Choice Award for outstanding achievement in poetry by poetry.com and the International Society of Poets for her poem, "Prayers on Blue Sky," which was published by the International Library of Poetry. Maffy's award-winning poem, "Prayers on Blue Sky," can be found featured on page one of the book titled "Forever Spoken." "Prayers on Blue Sky" is included in the compilation of poems contained in "Poems Written by Mafalda Medda." In 2009, Maffy moved to Nixa, Missouri to be closer to her daughter and granddaughter. Maffy was a published poet and songwriter who had a great love for butterflies, flowers, and God's creation. She was very creative and artistic in her forays into music, artwork, crocheting, knitting, and, above all, her poetry.
