I have been a writer of poetry, it seems, for most of my life. My early attempts were of love and romance, but as I grew older, the tone of my poetry changed. The more I age, my desire to write poetry only increases. I also find that I am and have been emotionally affected by dramas of sadness and cruelty played on the screen, tears coming to my eyes as I watch, but I find no shame in this. I hope my poetry is seen as worthwhile. I feel that I may have added to the pleasure of those who read poetry. When I was fourteen years of age, I left school, as was common in those days. The only work was in the bush, ring barking trees and fencing, trying to match it with men twice my age. I was seventeen when I found employment at an underground coalmine. After many years in the mines, my eyes became affected by the dim lights we wore on our heads. I was fortunate to be given work around the many boilers that powered generators and other steam engines at the mine. When I was just a boy, I followed the road through the mine that led to school. I used to stand in awe watching the winding engine hauling coal from underground, perhaps eight hundred feet below. I wasn't to know that one day would see me driving the same engine. I was just so proud to be in the company of such men. As I write this, I am almost ninety-eight years old. I hope that these poems of mine bring joy to every reader.
