Bill Martin Jr was an American educator, publishing executive, and author of more than 300 children's books including The Sounds of Mystery, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom (co-authored with John Archambault), and Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? The Bill Martin Jr. Award, which is the Kansas state award for best children's picture book, was established in his honor in 1996.

Carle's books all have an educational element - they teach about animals, numbers, colours and nature - but a big part of their appeal is that they are not didactic or laboured, but light and entertaining. There's warmth and humour there too Junior
