This study presents a formal analysis of political cartoons using methods from classical semiotics and discourse analysis, to analyze the visuals and texts. A selection of six political cartoons that were published during the presidential elections of 2015 are analyzed in detail. This research is an attempt to look at the political ideologies portrayed or hidden in the editorial cartoons of three main Sri Lankan newspapers during the Presidential Elections in 2015.

Dr. Theodore Warnakulasuriya S.J. (PhD University of Dublin), is a Senior Lecturer, teaching media studies at the Open University of Sri Lanka and a visiting Lecturer, teaching media studies at many other universities in Sri Lanka. Currently he is the Chairperson for Faculty Research Committee of the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences.
