Angeblich ist „Pony“ ein Kinderbuch. Aber was heißt das schon, bei einem Roman, der ein aufregender Western ist, dessen Vater-Sohn-Gespann am Herzen zieht und der so viele Geschichten, auch Geschichte, zu einem Erlebnis verwebt, das sich wahr anfühlt. Der Junge Silas lebt mit seinem Pa irgendwo in der Mitte der USA, die gerade noch der „wilde Westen“ sind. Ein paar Gangster holen seinen Vater ab, weil er ihnen helfen soll. Silas reitet auf einem Pferd hinterher, durch dichte Wälder, tiefe Schluchten, begleitet nur von seiner Fantasie: seinem imaginären Freund Mittenwool und immer wieder von den Geistern der Toten, die sehen zu können Silas’ Gabe ist – und seine Last. R. J. Palacio, erzählt von Einwanderung, besonderen Begabungen und einem Kontinuum der Liebe, das nicht auf Familien beschränkt ist. Eine warme, melancholische, hoffnungsvolle Lesefreude.
