As the American historian Henry Steele Commager put it: "A people without history, or ignorant of its history, is like a man without memory; condemned forever to repeat the discoveries already made in the past, to reinvent the same techniques, to struggle with the same problems, to make the same mistakes; and deprived, too, of the magnificent joys of remembrance". To immortalise the memory of the Senoufo people, this book plunges us into the heart of what might be called the sacred and the secret, through Poro and Sacred Wood. It invites us to discover the origins and workings of the poro, its role in society, the threats it faces and its ability to adapt to changes in Senoufo society. In short, this book takes us back to the identity or mark of the Senoufo people of Côte d'Ivoire.
