Portfolio management is the art and science of making decisions about investment mix and policy, matching investments to objectives, asset allocation for individuals and institutions, and balancing risk against performance.Institutional investors pools large sums of money and invest these monies in all assets.SSNIT is an institutional investor with statutory mandate to administer pension fund in Ghana. This work reveals that, their fund management performance depends on the general performance of the market and they perform abysmally poor prior to 2005 when there was unexpected market downturn. This led to agitation of the contributors resulting in formation of a new management team in 2006 who since then sought to improve on their portfolio management strategy but their activities were constantly interfered by the government. The work further used Sharpe, Treynor and Jensen Alpha indexes to ascertain how actively SSNIT portfolios were managed. The results indicated that, although the SSNIT is seen to be using active portfolio management techniques, they still perform below the average market returns.
