The Deluge was first published in 1886 and it is the second volume of a three-volume series known to Poles as "The Trilogy," having been preceded by With Fire and Sword (Ogniem i mieczem, 1884) and followed by Fire in the Steppe (Pan Wolodyjowski, 1888). The novel tells a story of a fictional Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth soldier and noble Andrzej Kmicic and shows a panorama of the Commonwealth during its historical period of the Deluge, which was a part of the Northern Wars. The novel itself is in three volumes, of which this is the first.

Henryk Sienkiewicz (1846-1916) - polski nowelista, powiesciopisarz i publicysta. Byl jednym z najpopularniejszych polskich pisarzy przelomu XIX i XX wieku. W 1905 roku otrzymal Nagrode Nobla w dziedzinie literatury za caloksztalt twórczosci. Jako felietonista warszawski zaslynal pod pseudonimem Litwos, publikujac swoje utwory w "Gazecie Polskiej". Wiele podrózowal. Pracowal jako korespondent w Ameryce Pólnocnej. Debiutowal w 1872 r. powiescia wspólczesna "Na marne" oraz tendencyjnymi nowelami "Humoreski z teki Worszylly". Slawe przyniosly mu powiesci historyczne. Jego najwazniejsze dziela to nowele: "Za chlebem", "Janko Muzykant", "Latarnik"; powiesci: "Trylogia" ("Ogniem i mieczem", "Potop", "Pan Wolodyjowski", "Quo vadis", "Krzyzacy" oraz "W pustyni i w puszczy".
