INDEPENDENT SECTOR is a national coalition of organizations that share a commitment to preserving and expanding voluntary action, philanthropy, and other aspects of private initiative for the public good. The alliance includes organizations representing the full range of the nation?s voluntary and philanthropic endeavor, including over eight hundred associations, institutions, foundations, and corporate giving programs. Powered by Coalition is founding president Brian O?Connell?s account of how and why such diverse groups were brought together in 1980, what it has taken to keep them together, and what they have been able to achieve through collaboration. Both a celebration of the independent sector in America and an examination of the very real threats to its future vitality, Powered by Coalition describes: ? The role political and economic forces play in shaping the sector ? Future policy challenges that will affect the sector ? Compelling reasons to sustain the sector for future generations ? Lessons about building, energizing, and maintaining large, diverse groups Everyone interested in strengthening America?s civil society will find a wealth of insights on the role and dynamics of the nonprofit sector, methods of building powerful coalitions, ways to influence policy makers in government, the challenges of leadership in the voluntary sector, and more.
