Thomas Reiter was born in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1940. He received his bachelor's degree in English from Loras College in 1962 and went on to receive his master's degree in English from the University of Virginia in 1963, and his doctorate degree in English from the University of Massachusetts in 1970. He is a professor of English and Wayne D. McMurry Endowed Chair in the Humanities at Monmouth University, where he has taught since 1968. He lives in Neptune, New Jersey. Reiter is the author of ten poetry collections, among them: Powers and Boundaries, Pearly Everlasting, Crossovers, and River Route. He has received many awards for his work, including the Academy of American Poets Prize, the Daily News Poetry Prize from the Caribbean Writer, and the Appalachia Poetry Prize. He has also received poetry fellowships from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Woodrow Wilson Foundation.
