Preference for male child is highly prevalent in India. This has resulted in early sex determination of foetus and termination of pregnancy if it is female. This trend is deepening its roots in the society so widely that it has altered the sex ratio of India alarmingly. This leads to various social problems like polyandry, rape, female abduction etc. This work is meant to find out various socio-cultural factors responsible for gender preference for child and its impact on reproductive behaviour of the society. For this study, women of various social classes from rural and urban areas were inquired. It has led to some dreadful conclusions and indicates that the sex ratio will decrease grievously unless effective measures are not taken immediately. Government needs to strengthen the policy to revert this gender preference for child and has to act in conjunction with the non government organizations for awareness of the community to curtail this atrocious trend.
