In this research work, modified microsponges have been developed that release drug in controlled manner and enhance the bioavailability of drug. This study presents a novel colon specific drug delivery system containing prednisolone. Colon targeting is naturally of value for the topical treatment of diseases of colon such as chron's disease, ulcerative colitis, colorectal cancer, and amebiasis. It is also valuable for the oral delivery of drugs unstable or susceptible to enzymatic degradation in upper G.I.T. tract. The advantages of targeting drug to specifically to the diseased colon are reduced incidence of systemic side-effects, lower dose of drug, supply of the drug to the biophase only when it is required and maintenance of the drug in its intact form as close as possible to the target site. That's why improved drug delivery system is required for drugs currently in use to treat localised disease of the colon. It has been concluded that obtained microsponges work as a best dosage form for colon targeting due to good mucoadhesion property and more retention time in the colon. Microsponges based drug delivery would play a beneficial role in future clinical purposes.
