Headaches affect different proportions of many populations and are experienced by any age, gender or ethincity group. This study identifies the prevalence and impact of primary headaches on academic, family and social lives in university students at a Durban university, South Africa. The most common type of primary headache identified was tension type. Headaches impacted negatively on academic activities of affected participants, including limited concentration and a complete halt to studies. Family, social and leisure activities were also neglected during a headache attack.
