Jane Austen, uma da smaiores romancistas da literatura inglesa, nasceu na vila de Steventon(Hampshire), em 16 de dezembro de 1775 e cresceu em uma família unida e feliz. Seus pais, Cassandra e George Austen, eram membros respeitados na comunidade local, sendo que criaram seus oito filhos (seis meninos e duas meninas) em um ambiente propício ao aprendizado e à criatividade. Sabe-se que as crianças eram estimuladas a ler os diversos títulos dispostos na extensa biblioteca de seu pai. Não por acaso a autora descobriu seu talento ainda jovem. Fascinada pelo universo das histórias, começou a escrever seus próprios romances, poemas e peças ainda na adolescência, em1790.Tinha apenas 21 anos quando escreveu Orgulho e Preconceito, em 1797, mas a obra só chegou a ser publicada em 1813 por contada grande aceitação de seu primeiro título: Razão e Sensibilidade. Seus romances, caracterizados pela narrativa elegante, pelo cuidados o retrato dos costumes de sua época e pela abordagem singular da busca pelo amor e pela felicidade, continuam ocupando lugar de destaque entre os clássicos atemporais, mesmo mais de dois séculos após sua morte, em 18 de julho de 1817.
