Optic nerve sheath meningioma (ONSM) is a rare tumour. Cases are usually separated into primary ONSM, which arises either intraorbitally or, less commonly, intracanalicularly, and secondary ONSM, which arises intracranially and subsequently invades the optic canal and orbit. This is the first book to cover all important aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of primary ONSM. After a general introduction, individual chapters discuss the clinical presentation, clinical examination and diagnosis, imaging, and histology. Treatment options are then addressed in detail, with special emphasis on external beam radiation therapy, and in particular stereotactic fractionated radiation therapy. The latter has recently produced consistently good results and is now considered the emerging treatment of choice for the vast majority of patients with primary ONSM. This well-illustrated book will prove invaluable to all practitioners who encounter primary ONSM in their clinical work.
Rezensionen
From the reviews:

"This is an interesting book. ... It is an absolute 'must have' book for anybody involved in the management of optic nerve meningioma or orbital disease in particular. ... The number of people actively dealing with the investigation and management of these tumours is small. They will undoubtedly benefit enormously from having this on their bookshelves ... . it would be useful to have as a reference book in libraries of hospitals and other institutions where this disease is dealt with." (Alan Jackson, RAD Magazine, January, 2009)

"The potential audience is broad, from medical students to experienced attending physicians across the fields of primary care, ophthalmology, pathology, radiology, surgery, and radiation oncology. This is an excellent reference for anyone in contact with patients presenting with this uncommon disease. ... This is an excellent reference, highly worthy of space on any desk or bookshelf. ... The book successfully delivers a concise yet comprehensive overview of the diagnosis and management of this disease."(Chirstopher Loiselle, Doody's Review Service, February, 2009)
"It may seem ambitious to dedicate a textbook to the topic of optic nerve meningioma. ... This slim ... book addresses this specialized subject. ... The chapters are well organized and beautifully presented. Each begins with a clear summary and is well supported by extensive references. ... The radiographic images are high definition and of excellent quality. ... The book should be useful for any ophthalmologist involved in the care of patients with optic nerve sheath meningioma ... ." (Erika Marie Damato and Bertil Damato, Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, Vol. 248, May, 2010)…mehr
