A general historical movement where from pyramids to cathedrals, from cairns to palaces, the powerful try to survive their deaths by systematically putting art at the service of their prestige. To live free is therefore to escape from prestige. La passion esthétique, la passion des formes, s'enracine donc dans l'évolution biologique. Seul un intérêt de nature esthétique peut dès lors expliquer la mise en place de réseaux de circulation d'objets parfaitement inutiles sur des distances de plusieurs milliers de kilomètres, et ceci entre des sociétés paléolithiques vivant par ailleurs en complète autarcie économique. La fin du paléolithique supérieur voit la lente émergence des inégalités aux sein de sociétés de chasseurs-cueilleurs initialement fermement égalitaires et l'emploi systématique des émotions esthétiques par les puissants et les religieux. Un mouvement historique général où de pyramides en cathédrales, de tumulus en palais, les puissants tentent de se survivre en mettant systématiquement l'art au service de leur prestige.
