From the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries, it was often held in conjunction with one or more of the nearby ecclesiastical principalities of Cologne, Paderborn, Osnabrück, Hildesheim, and Liège. Münster was bordered by the Netherlands to the west, by the Duchy of Cleves, the Vest Recklinghausen, and the County of Mark in the south, the Prince-Bishopric of Paderborn and the Prince-Bishopric of Osnabrück in the east. In the north it bordered East Frisia and Oldenburg. In the north-east was the Electorate of Hanover (est. 1692).
