Before the Partition of India, there were about 584 Princely States which existed in India. In 1947, the British with its withdrawal from the Indian subcontinent, all the Princely States under the Indian Independence Act 1947 which outside of British India existed were released completely free from the British Control. The States were left with the option to decide freely to accede to India or to the newly created Pakistan or to remain independent State.
