After the introduction of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), a Poincaré-invariant quantum non-Abelian gauge field theory based on quark and gluon degrees of freedom, the strong interaction was better understood. The mass spectra of ordinary heavy mesons and other aspects are examined using a nonrelativistic potential approach, which includes, among other things, crucial non-perturbative quantum chromodynamics features. An overview of how the heavy meson quark model has been implemented over the previous few decades.
