This textbook details five strategies through which petrol (gasoline), a critical and non-renewable energy resource, can be conserved in Nigeria. While several developed countries, due to the rising price of petrol and its negative environmental impact, are promoting conservation of the product, several developing countries are paying little or no attention to this. It then became pertinent to draw the attention of policy-makers in Nigeria to this problem and explain possible strategies to promote conservation of petrol. This text shows that the rising consumption of petrol in Nigeria can be curbed, in the short-term, through higher petrol price and utilization of public transport; adoption of new, fuel-efficient vehicles in the medium-term; and adoption of hybrid electric vehicles and attitude change towards fuel consumption in the longer-term. In achieving this, governments are advised to enlighten the people about the benefits of conserving petrol while improving electricity supply which epileptic nature has promoted intensive consumption of petrol in the country.
