The properties of materials having lamellar structure have been studied for last few years. Some elements, oxides, hydroxides, halides, chalcogenides and other various complex systems exhibit the lamellar structure. Many of these materials are found in nature and remaining can be synthesized in the laboratory. Layered structure (lamellar) solids of transition metal dichalcogenides have been extensively studied. Among these the binary II-VI compounds with Nb as cation and S / Se as anion form a very interesting class of lamellar semiconductors. Transition metal dichalcogenides exhibit fascinating properties due to their van der waals bonded layered structure, including charge density wave instabilities.
