PROPHETS, MIRACLES, AND THE "PROSPERITY GOSPEL" The Christian faith is growing exponentially in the Global South. In Africa, churches are overflowing and missionary-minded leaders are planting new congregations weekly. Pentecostalism is the biggest and fastest-growing Christian movement in the whole world since the Reformation. Its fastest growth is taking place in Sub-Saharan Africa, which is home to 44 percent of all 279 million Pentecostal Christians across the globe. Nigeria alone, Africa's most densely inhabited nation, has more than twice as many Protestants, defined to include Anglicans and Independent churches, as Germany, which is the birthplace of the Protestant Reformation. More than 1 in every 4 out of the 2.18 billion Christians worldwide is Pentecostal-Charismatic. Over the last 500 years or so, there are a number of restoration movements that have brought back to the church and revived some specific truths, teachings and spiritual experiences that previously were neglected or unknown. In recent history, the prophetic ministry is one such restoration movements. The prophetic ministry as exercised today has the most potential of destroying even the other restoration truths the church has experienced in the past five centuries. The prophetic ministry also has the potential for a greater good of the body of Christ or it could self-destruct. The prophetic movement has become preoccupied and impressed with itself and a clutch for self-labeling, self-promotion, self-advertisement, and self-possession by some present Pentecostal-Charismatic ministries. As a result, outrageous false prophecies and miracles are on the increase. In the process, seeds of strife, division, confusion, and rebellion are sown into the hearts of God's people intentionally or out of ignorance of God's word. A modern-day prophetic ministry has the potential to exercise control by manipulating people with counterfeit supernatural knowledge, visions, revelations and miracles, when it lacks the Christ-like character, a right spirit or motivation, and does not operate according to Biblical principles. 22 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. Mark 13:22 The prophetic ministry can, therefore, bring life or death, blessing or burden.Like every restoration move of God, the prophetic movement has produced its share of abuses when people stretch it too far or totally misapply the truths that God is restoring. Some have perverted the truths of the prophetic ministry and have used them for personal gain or ungodly purposes. Therefore, many of the rising prophetic voices need calibration and alignment of what Biblical prophecy is, it's purpose and proper use. In the exercise of the prophetic ministry, great integrity and balance are required. In the book, true characteristics that distinguish between Godly prophetic leadership and counterfeit, opportunistic, spiritually abusive and cultic leadership have been outlined.
Autorenporträt
Joshua M. Ngoma is the founder and President of Joshua M. Ngoma, Inc. He is an Author Entrepreneur and Speaker. He extensively writes and speaks on Government, Church and State. He was born in Zambia on March 22, 1968. He has lived in four historic nations on three continents, educated in England and South Africa and now lives in Chicago in the United States. Joshua's first brush with the deplorable and almost non-existent healthcare facilities in Zambia's rural areas was when his mother was diagnosed with cervical cancer in its late stages. At the time of her demise, Joshua was shocked that neither the medical staff nor even basic pain medication to mitigate her excruciating condition was available as she slowly passed away clasped in his arms. This sad experience left an indelible mark on Joshua as to how rural communities are underserved in service delivery in the most basic human needs such as education, healthcare, and infrastructural facilities. Consequently, Joshua became a key member of the founding leadership of the National Citizens Coalition (NCC) party as its Spokesperson and Secretary General, respectively, and as one of the two principle architects of the manifesto for Zambia in September of 1997. The premise of the NCC was that Zambia needed a new and modern breed of leaders, a new vision relevant to our times and that the basis to facilitate for equitable delivery of goods and services by the government is a leadership rooted in morality and integrity, especially in weak economies like Africa's. Joshua believes that democracy ought to be based on laws and institutions and not on the dictates and whims of individuals. Even though the intent and vision of the NCC were noble, and were meant for the general good of our budding democracy, its goals became untenable by every probable calculation at the time to impact significant change. It became clear then for Joshua to recluse himself from the political process for "self-preservation". He moved to Chicago in the United States. Joshua attained his Form six (Cambridge A levels) from Mpelembe High school in Zambia and later attended the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology in the UK. Joshua also attended Rhema Bible College in Johannesburg, South Africa in January of 1993 at the precipice of great and momentous change in the life of that nation. The pressure on the apartheid government to unconditionally release Mandela from prison was a worldwide phenomenon and the groundswell within South Africa for his release reached a precipitous point forcing the government to declare Mandela a free man in February of 1990. Rhema played a leading role, representing a coalition of many churches and other faith-based organizations, in rendering a prophetic voice to the powers that be to end racial segregation. Rhema became an oasis of spiritual regeneration, prophetic direction, and social relevance. These were teachable moments that left a lasting impression on Joshua's life and prepared him to deal with the nuances of God, Government, and State. In 1994, Joshua moved back to Ndola in Zambia after Rhema and served in the Pastorate for 5 years. Joshua's unwavering faith, contagious positivity, encouragement and belief in Africa's immense potential to do great things remain unmatched. His brilliant insights, zest for life and future prospects for Africa's success will remain refreshing and he definitely has earned a seat at the table of contemporary visionaries. In Chicago, Joshua is also the founding and current President of the Zambian Heritage Association in Chicago, (ZHAC), an organization that caters to specific needs and promotes cultural values of people of Zambian descent in the
