Venous thromboembolic disease, such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary thromboembolism, are important causes of maternal mortality and have been considered a public health problem. The incidence increases 2 to 4 times during pregnancy, being higher in cesarean delivery than in vaginal delivery. The disease has a higher incidence in the left leg. Another predisposing factor reported is that of decreased flow in the left leg when the pregnant woman adopts a supine position. The results of studies of risk factors in pregnant women to suffer thromboembolic phenomena are presented.
