This book is a collection of up-to-date, detailed protocols for physical chromosome mapping and their applications for studying genome organization and evolution in Insects and related Arthropod species. There is a need for such a book to understand the results being produced by the i5K project, which is collecting whole-genome sequences for 5,000 insect and related arthropod species. These results are often collections of unassembled contigs and supercontigs. This book provides cytogeneticists with the necessary background and protocols to understand and assemble chromosome-based genome assemblies from such whole-genome sequence data.…mehr

Igor V. Sharakhov is an associate professor in the Department of Entomology at Virginia Polytechnic and State University. Dr. Sharakhov earned his PhD in genetics from the Institute of Cytology and Genetics in Novosibirsk, Russia. He leads a research program focused on the comparative and evolutionary genomics of arthropods of medical importance. He has also conducted research on the molecular cytogenetics of African malaria mosquitoes at the State University of New York at Buffalo and on the comparative genome mapping of African malaria mosquitoes at the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Sharakhov serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Insect Science (Entomological Society of America), Journal of Visualized Experiments, and PLoS ONE.
