The poet sees and depicts a mythical happening differently from the sculptor or the vase-painter. Using well-known vase paintings from classical antiquity, Klaus Junker presents an exemplary account of the complexity of these depictions, which reveal their own understanding of the Homeric epics. Traditionally, these vase paintings have been interpreted as mere illustrations of the poems, but this does not give full credit to their significance. It is rather the case that, starting from the famous heroes and the dramatic scenes in the Homeric epics, the vase painters develop an image of the protagonists which is both psychologically conclusive and artistically innovative.
Der Dichter sieht und schildert ein Geschehen im Mythos anders als der bildende Künstler oder der Vasenmaler. Anhand bekannter antiker Vasenbilder zeigt Klaus Junker exemplarisch die Vielschichtigkeit solcher Darstellungen, welche ein durchaus eigenes Verständnis der homerischen Epen sichtbar werden lassen. Die traditionelle Interpretation derartiger Vasenbilder als bloße Illustration der Dichtung wird ihrer Bedeutung deshalb nicht gerecht. Vielmehr entrollen die Vasenmaler, ausgehend von den bekannten Heroen und den dramatischen Szenen in der homerischen Dichtung, ein Bild ihrer Protagonisten, das sowohl psychologisch schlüssig wie künstlerisch innovativ ist.
