Qasr al-Ayn literally means "Castle of the eye" in Arabic. The street is also known as Tahrir Qasr al-Ayn Street because of its outlet into Midan Tahrir (Tahrir Square). The streets in this area of downtown are famous for being constructed during the time of Muhammad Ali of Egypt. Qasr al-Ayn Street is located in downtown Cairo off of the "Sadat" metro stop. The street runs east from Midan Tahrir (Tahrir Square) for several hundred meters. Midan Tahrir was originally built in the late 1860s as Khairy Pasha palace, where the American University in Cairo's campus was built in the 1920s. Cairo Metro's Sadat Station serves Tahrir Square, providing links to Maadi, Giza, and other parts of Cairo. The area around Midan Tahririncludes the Egyptian Museum, Arab League headquarters, the Mogamma Building, the American University in Cairo's downtown campus, and the Nile Hotel.
