Qigong Sensory Training (QST) is research-based treatment for young children with autism that integrates concepts from Chinese medicine, Western science, early childhood intervention and parent training. The core of the treatment is a daily, parent-delivered massage based on principles of Chinese medicine, which is given for at least five months. According to Chinese medicine, the underlying reason for the delay in development and abnormal behavior seen in autism is an impairment in the function of the sensory system and autonomic nervous system. The massage returns the sensory system and autonomic nervous system towards normal functioning, thus creating the situation for normal learning and development. As the weeks of daily massage pass, the child becomes calmer and more aware, better able to focus and pay attention to the human face and voice, and better able to self-regulate in the areas of sleep and digestion. At the end of five months, controlled studies show significant improvement in the treatment group in the areas of sensory impairment, self-regulation, behavior, and social/language skills.
