The university library is nothing more than the university itself, where it is known that universities are centres that transmit knowledge through teaching, people and books. Its specific objectives are determined by the university and the general objective is to facilitate the access and the use of the sources of information that represent the basis of teaching and research. The interest in the study was the possibility to discuss the barriers that hinder the development of quality service in a university library and identify the challenges that are posed to the managers of this library. The librarian, the main agent of information, cannot live in the past, he or she needs to be looking ahead, attuned, especially with technological innovations. The university library must be managed according to modern practices, considering the market forces and current economic environment.
