Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Raccoon Strait is a waterway of the San Francisco Bay between Angel Island and the Tiburon Peninsula, mainland Marin County, California. From Angel Island California State Park in San Francisco Bay. Ref. California State Parks Angel Island. In 1814, the British, 26-gun, sloop of war, the H.M.S. Raccoon, was damaged off the coast of Oregon, but managed to stay afloat long enough to reach San Francisco Bay. From March 13 to 19th of that year, the ship was repaired on the beach at Ayala Cove on the Northern portion of Angel Island; the present day ferry boat dock. This event is commemorated by the name given to the deep-water channel between Tiburon and Angel Island, now spelled Racoon Strait. The ship''s presence here is little known fact and may or may not be related to the war of 1812. More likely the ship was protecting British and Canadian fur traders. In those days, the fur trade dominated business in the northwestern portion of the North American continent.
