In the course of the last two decades, the number of arrests, imprisonment and detention of aliens and citizens of foreign origin has increased significantly in the West. This volume examines this growing trend towards racial criminalization and victimization of migrants in the West, exploring the problem in a polysemous context that concerns immigrants, deviants and the many salient characteristics affecting both emigrating and immigrating societies and relations between the two poles.

Salvatore Palidda is Professor of Sociology at the University of Genoa, Italy. He is the author of many publications on migrations and social control, and since 1995 has directed a number of European projects related to the themes explored in this book. His most recent book (co-edited with Alessandro Dal Lago) is Conflict, Security and the Reshaping of Society: The Civilization of War (2010).
